We enjoyed our last day of September together. What a great month it has been! Everyday we graph the weather, make observations, and share new findings with our classmates. Graphs help us see information in an organized way. We have created tally graphs, bar graphs, and picto-graphs. Take a look! Ask your child if we have more boys or girls in our class?
We worked hard during letter/word study this morning. We worked in small groups and partnerships to practice many different skills. The students worked on building one another's names, putting together letter/sound puzzles, finding uppercase and lowercase letters during BINGO, and studying word families on the iPads. A productive and focused time for all of the s
The students have been working so hard during independent writing. They are learning that writers don't just scribble a picture and then try to create a story from their thoughtless work. Instead, they think about what they want to write, sketch a picture to go with it by adding lots of details and finally, they think of the words they want to add to help tell their story. Kindergarten writers don't write like grown-up writers. They write like kindergartners. They stretch out their words and write the letters they hear. There are many tools in our room that can help them with this hard work (see the letter - keyword chart next to these writers).
We focused on the number three today. The students were challenged to create different groups of three objects using the counters from the middle of our table. This required some careful thinking and problem solving. We often get the chance to learn from our friends by doing a museum walk after some great practice. This gives the students an opportunity to observe strategies that they may not have thought of otherwise. We continue to learn about the characteristics that make us unique. Today we read a project-able book on the Smart Board about many different types of hair. Volunteers circled the word "is" on every page. By the end of the book we knew that word in a "snap". We then created a class book about our hair.
We celebrated Mia's birthday today and had the chance to play the math game "Birthday Candles" on the Smart Board. A link to this game is on the math page of our website. Everyone waited patiently for their turn, especially Mary Kate, who was the very last one to go. We also played "Magic Number" with the number "5". We are getting faster with this game but need to remember to stay calm and speak only when it is our turn. You can try playing this game at home. Ask your child to teach youThis way everyone enjoys it!
